Israel Adesanya (23-1) is defending his UFC 185-pound title for the sixth time. The Nigerian-born New Zealand champion had previously won three unanimous decision fights against Jared Cannonier, Robert Whittaker, and Marvin Vettori. Prior to that, he moved up a weight class to compete for the 205-pound title, but was defeated by then-champion Jan Blachowicz via UD, ending his unbeaten MMA streak.
Alex Pereira (6-1) made his official UFC debut last November and has since won three fights. In his previous fight in July, the Brazilian contender used punches to knock out Sean Strickland in the first round. Previously, he won a unanimous decision over Bruno Silva and TKO’d Andreas Michailidis in Round 2.
Pereira, a former two-division GLORY middleweight and light heavyweight champion, faced Artem Vakhitov in a championship rematch and lost the 95 kg (209.4 lbs) title by majority decision in his final kickboxing fight.
UFC 281: Adesanya vs. Pereira will be broadcast live on ESPN+ in the United States and Kayo in Australia.
